New Yorkers Choose the City’s Next Mayor, Comptroller, and other Offices Today

     “Happy Election Day!” said L. Joy Williams, a member of the New York City Elections Consortium. “It is one of the most exciting days.

     “We have the ability to choose, by going to the voting booth, [which voters can do until 9pm tonight] and making the choices on whom we want to represent us.

     Everyone uses the phrase that ‘People died for your right to vote,’ but more importantly, they advocated, fought, and continue to fight so that you have a say in who governs you and how government functions."

     One of the ways New Yorkers can make their voices heard, said Williams, who also serves as the president of the Brooklyn NAACP,  “is by going to the polls and voting for whom you prefer.”

     Williams, whom mayor said “has spent so much of her life encouraging voters to come out, and educating voters,” reminded NYC resident to “vote up and down the ballot: for city offices, council members, and the ballot initiatives on the back of the ballots.”

     "It is critical to vote in every election," said Carolyn DeWitt, the executive director of Rock the Vote. "But turnout in local elections in major US cities, voter turnout is sometimes less than 10%.

     "We know that voting determines many of the decisions that impact our day-to-day lives."

     Mayor de Blasio said this morning that he will be voting at his local poll site in Brooklyn around noon. 

     “I am looking forward to voting for New York City’s next mayor: Eric Adams, my fellow Brooklynite, who I think is going to do a fantastic job.”

     The mayor also encouraged all New Yorkers to vote “Yes” on the five ballot initiatives that are aimed at “fighting the climate crisis and improving and strengthening our democracy.”
