New Yorkers Warned About Surge in Scam Texts and Fake DMV, E-ZPass Websites

State officials are warning residents to be on high alert for a wave of scam text messages and imitation websites posing as the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles and tolling agencies. The fraudulent sites and phishing messages often claim drivers owe fines for traffic tickets, E-ZPass fees, or tolls — and use urgent language to pressure victims into paying immediately.

Governor Kathy Hochul said the schemes are designed to steal personal information that can be used for identity theft and financial fraud. Officials stress that neither DMV nor E-ZPass will ever demand immediate payment via text message or email. Drivers are urged to verify suspicious messages directly with agencies, avoid clicking unknown links, and check their credit reports if they believe their data may have been compromised.

Authorities say scammers have also targeted drivers with fake “Congestion Relief Zone” toll notices since January. The public is reminded that legitimate toll agencies will only direct customers to their official websites and will never request sensitive information through unsolicited texts.
