NHTSA Proposes Making Rear Seat Belt Warnings Mandatory

If the proposal of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is adopted, car manufacturers would be required to install rear seat belt warnings in all vehicles. Most vehicles currently feature these warnings for the driver and passengers’ seat only.
“Wearing a seat belt is one of the most effective ways to prevent injury and death in a crash,” NHTSA Acting Administrator Ann Carlson said.
According to the rule, the cars would sound the alarm for 60 seconds if the rear belt it unbuckled, and for 30 seconds if the belt becomes unbuckled mid-drive. The volume, type of alarm, and frequency of the alarm, would be left up to the vehicle manufacturers.
