NY Tops, By Far, List of States Losing Population

New York – New York state residents are voting with their feet.

The Empire State by far suffered the biggest population loss of all 50 states in 2017, the latest figures show.

Zippia, a career website, analyzed census findings from that year, and found that nearly a third of a million residents left the state. The runner up was nearby New Jersey, which lost fewer than 100,000.

It is hard to point definitively to any single cause for New York’s loss of 307,190 citizens. But the state regularly comes in as first or second on the list of highest taxed residents.

The state has also undergone a progressive metamorphosis, passing laws that make it harder to do business or fight crime. Those laws, however, were mostly voted on after 2017.

Two lawmakers recently called for a panel to be formed to study why so many residents are leaving New York.
