NYC Cyclists Now Face Court Summonses For Traffic Violations
By Idy Perl
New York City is cracking down on cyclists and moped drivers as part of Mayor Eric Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch’s “Quality of Life” initiative.
Under the new policy, cyclists, moped drivers, and e-bike riders will now receive court summonses for six low-level traffic violations: reckless operation, disobeying red lights, failure to stop at stop signs, riding under the influence, and riding in the wrong direction.
Until now, such infractions would result in a basic traffic ticket for a fine that could be paid online, but riders will now have to appear in court. The new policy is just one of the changes that will be implemented as part of the “Quality of Live” initiative that launched last month.
The NYPD will initially target specific areas that have the most reported concerns, with many of them around Brooklyn.
