NYC DOT Warns of Parking Meter Scam Involving Fraudulent QR Codes
By BoroPark24 Staff
The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) is warning New Yorkers to be on alert for a new parking meter scam targeting ParkNYC users.
According to DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez, at least one parking meter has been found with a fraudulent QR code sticker illegally affixed to it. When scanned, the code directs users to a third-party website that asks for credit card information.
Officials stress that this is a scam, and users should not scan any QR codes found on meters or input any payment information through suspicious websites. The only legitimate ways to pay for metered parking in New York City are through the official ParkNYC app or directly on a ParkNYC meter.
To combat the scam, NYC DOT has launched a citywide response:
- ParkNYC users will receive in-app alerts reminding them of the correct payment methods.
- Law enforcement has been notified and investigations are underway.
- DOT crews are conducting citywide inspections of meters to remove any unauthorized stickers or signage.
- A reporting system has been established for the public to notify authorities of any QR code stickers found on meters.
Residents who encounter QR codes on meters are urged to report them immediately by calling 212-839-7100 or emailing parknyc@flowbirdapp.com. Anyone who suspects they may have fallen victim to the scam should contact their bank or credit card company and report the incident to law enforcement.
“Consumers beware: scammers are targeting parking meters, and we want you to be vigilant,” said Commissioner Rodriguez. “If you see a QR code on a parking meter, do not scan it and please report it. This is a scam to collect your payment information, and we are working with law enforcement to hold those responsible accountable.”
