NYC Ferry Service Resumes After Nearly Three-Week Suspension Due to Ice

By Yisroel R.

NYC Ferry service resumed on Sunday after nearly three weeks of suspended operations caused by icy conditions on local waterways, transportation officials announced.

Service was halted on January 27 after frigid temperatures led to heavy ice buildup on the East River, Hudson River, and New York Harbor, creating unsafe conditions for ferry travel. Officials said the ice made navigation hazardous and forced the temporary shutdown of multiple routes.

During the suspension, regular riders were left scrambling for alternate ways to travel throughout the city. For some commuters, the interruption was more than just a scheduling issue, as many rely entirely on the ferry for transportation and were unable to conduct their regular routine.

With temperatures now climbing above freezing, water conditions have improved enough for ferries to safely return to operation. Officials said boats will continue running on a weekend schedule through the Monday holiday while crews work to transition back to normal weekday service.

Passengers are encouraged to check the latest schedule updates, as minor delays may continue while operations fully stabilize.
