NYC Shops: Shut The Front Door
By Idy Perl
While temperatures soar across New York City, the Department of Consumer and Worker Protection graciously reminded businesses that it is illegal for businesses in NYC to have their windows or doors open while air conditioning is running in the store.
Since 2015 businesses are required by law to keep all windows and doors shut while the AC is on in an effort to… “save the environment”. Give small business owners another thing to worry about? It’s unclear.
The Department of Consumer and Worker Protection also encourages customers to report violators. “As we enter the summer months, some businesses may try to attract customers by leaving their doors open while the A/C is running – an irresponsible practice that comes at the cost of our environment,” said DCWP Commissioner Vilda Vera Mayuga. “If you come across a store operating their A/C with their doors or windows open, I urge you to contact 311 and file a complaint as soon as possible.”
You know, be a good neighbor and all that.
