NYPD Introduces The Barnacle
By Idy Perl
The NYPD is using new tactics to crack down on illegal parking and drivers with outstanding tickets.
The NYPD has started using what’s called a barnacle, device almost as large as a car windshield, that provides 1,000 pounds of suction to stick to the window, effectively blocking the driver’s entire view. The device is already being used on illegally parked trucks in Queens.
The only way to get it off is to pay the fee, which can be done online or over the phone. The barnacle has a QR code on it which the driver can scan to see the fee they owe. Once they pay the fee they will receive a release code to punch into the barnacle in order to release it. The driver will then be responsible for dropping the barnacle off at the nearest barnacle dropbox.
