Photo Gallery: Children Selling Daled Minim on 13th Avenue Before Sukkos
By Y.M. Lowy
In the weeks leading up to Sukkos, 13th Avenue bursts to life with the hum of trade in esrogim and lulavim. Most tables are run by adults, but it’s the children who catch your eye first. Some sit alongside their fathers at tables stacked with sets, while others run their own tables as salespeople, calling out prices and proudly showcasing their sets. Their voices carry over the sounds of the street as they wave lulavim, handle the merchandise carefully, and somehow make the whole avenue feel alive. It’s a small industry within a larger one, but the energy they bring gives the street a heartbeat all its own.
Children weave confidently through the crowd, moving from table to table, careful with every esrog, learning the trade, and taking real pride in what they do. In many cases, it’s not just the daled minim they sell on behalf of someone else, they’re offering their own creations, like 'ringlech' and other daled minim accessories, selling them for a dollar with full passion.
By the end of the block, it’s the children’s careful work and confidence that linger in your mind - the true pulse of 13th Avenue before Sukkos.
