How to Survive (and Enjoy) Chol Hamoed Trips

How to Survive (and Enjoy) Chol Hamoed Trips

By Y.M. Lowy

You’ve got carriages, snacks, and six strong opinions on where to go before you’ve even left the driveway. But somehow, between the noise and the crumbs, a Chol Hamoed trip becomes the best kind of family chaos.

Between all the planning, it’s easy to forget the simple things that keep the day running smoothly. A little forethought goes a long way toward turning a hectic outing into a happy memory.

Start by leaving early. The later you go, the longer you’ll sit in traffic behind everyone else who had the same bright idea.

Fridays are nice for a short trip, but come back early enough to settle in before Shabbos. No trip is worth starting Shabbos in a rush.

Keep expectations realistic. You probably won’t fit six stops into one day, and that’s fine. Choose one main place, whether it’s a park, zoo, or farm, and let the kids enjoy it without rushing from spot to spot.

Food can make the whole trip better. Bring enough for everyone, a few extra napkins, and plenty of water so you’re not stuck buying expensive drinks later.

Tuck a paper or name tag with your number into each child’s pocket, just in case someone gets lost in the crowd.

Remember, Chol Hamoed spots are packed with Yidden, but we don’t own the place. A smile, patience in line, and a bit of respect go a long way.

Before visiting beaches, trails, or parks, take a quick look at local safety rules. Even if you might not understand the purpose, they’re there to keep everyone safe.

The perfect Chol Hamoed trip isn’t about the perfect place. It’s about the family, the laughter, and the moments that will be remembered forever.
