Police Crackdown At Battery Tunnel

Police Crackdown At Battery Tunnel

By Idy Perl

Multiple NYPD units have been spotted outside the Battery Tunnel today, signaling yet another crackdown operation. The last police crackdown at the Battery Tunnel was back in May, as was reported by BoroPark24 at the time.

In addition to the police, tow trucks and numerous personnel are stationed outside the tunnel as well, presumably to tow ghost vehicles without proper registration.

This comes as Mayor Adams, NYC DOT Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez and the NYPD announced new proposed laws regarding license plate obstructions on Tuesday morning.

The new proposal expands the definition of an obstructed license to include any dirt, rust, glass or plastic coverings, substances, or materials that cause a license plate to be unreadable. Drivers can face fines of up to $50 for parking with an obstructed license plate. A public hearing on the proposed rule will be held on February 6, at 10 am.

“Drivers who obscure their license plate think they are above the law and put everyone at risk,” NYC DOT Commissioner Rodriguez said. “By expanding the definition of what is illegal, we will be able to hold reckless drivers accountable and create safer and more accessible streets for all.”

The Adams administration has taken a firm stance on ghost vehicles since the start of the administration and has removed over 73,000 ghost cars and unregistered motorized vehicles, including scooters, bikes, and ATVs, from city streets.
