Police Warn of Broadening Scam: Appearing as Con Ed Workers
by Meir Sternhill
Police are warning New York residents to be aware of a growing scam, where intruders gain entry into homes by posing as utility workers.
A woman in Brooklyn’s Brownsville neighborhood near Boro Park was the victim of one such scam early Tuesday morning. Two men wearing Con Edison uniforms knocked on her door just before 2:30 a.m. and were allowed in.
The thieves, one of whom was armed with a gun, threatened the woman and tied her up. They then stole a television, her chain necklace and wedding band before fleeing.
"I heard somebody knocking and they said 'Con Edison,'" the woman told PIX11 News. "I said, 'Why is Con Edison here? I don't have lights off.'" But she let them in anyhow.
The victim suffered minor injuries that did not require hospitalization. She was, however, shaken up.
Police have not made an arrest.
