Protest at Gracie Mansion Results in Crackdown on Illegal Fireworks

Mayor Bill de Blasio today announced a crackdown on illegal fireworks in New York City. After nights of endless fireworks being detonated in neighborhoods across New York City, protestors gathered last night in front of the Mayor’s residence - Gracie Mansion - to call out the lack of an enforcement response to the illegal fireworks.

The plague of fireworks citywide enraged city residents and social media users who complained for days about the lack of a response from the City to the situation.

Today, the Mayor responded and announced that a new task force made up of 10 officers from NYPD Intelligence Bureau, 12 FDNY Fire Marshals and 20 members of the Sheriff’s Bureau of Criminal Investigation will be cracking down across the city on the sale and use of illegal fireworks.

“Illegal fireworks are both dangerous and a public nuisance” said Mayor Bill de Blasio. “We’re cracking down on this activity at the source to ensure the safety of all New Yorkers and the ability of our neighbors to get some sleep.”

“Fireworks are illegal in New York City for a reason: they are extremely dangerous and can cause fires and serious injuries,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “Our Fire Marshals will work closely with their fellow law enforcement agencies to address this growing problem that is impacting New Yorkers in communities across our city.”
