Readers Write: 14th Avenue Closure Brings Boro Park to a Standstill - Why Can't Repairs Be Done Overnight?

The ongoing closure of 14th Avenue between 39th and 40th Streets for sinkhole repairs is creating a traffic nightmare throughout Boro Park, leaving drivers, school buses, and residents stuck in severe congestion for much of the day.

This isn't just a rush-hour problem. Even at 1:45 PM, when traffic would normally be lighter, surrounding streets are packed with vehicles barely moving. Photos taken Monday afternoon show just how serious the situation has become.

School buses carrying children are being caught in the congestion, along with MTA buses, parents, delivery trucks, and everyday commuters. A single road closure is affecting the entire neigborhood, turning normally short trips into frustrating delays.

While everyone understands that repairing a dangerous sinkhole is necessary, why can't more of this work be performed overnight or on weekends, when traffic is significantly lighter?

Could additional crews or extended shifts help reopen this important roadway sooner?

Residents aren't asking the city to compromise safety. They're asking for common-sense scheduling and greater urgency in addressing a closure that affects thousands of people every day.

It's time for the community to speak up.

Residents experiencing these delays are encouraged to contact local repestitives and request that the city consider overnight and weekend work to speed up the repairs.

Residents should also file a 311 complaint describing the severe traffic conditions and requesting immediate attention:

The more residents who report the problem, the harder it becomes for city officials to overlook the impact on the community.

Necessary repairs should not mean bringing an entire neighborhood to a standstill day after day.
