REPORT: Bill de Blasio May See Opportunity in Newly-Drawn 11th District

By Yehudit Garmaise

Not long after US Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (R-Staten Island) won in November 2020 in the 11th Congressional District that had been previously held for a year by Democrat Max Rose, the former incumbent said he was up for a re-match in the next election, however, in the primary, Rose might have a Democratic challenger: former Mayor Bill de Blasio.

The newly drawn congressional districts, which were carefully chosen to increase Democratic voters’ distribution in such a way as to ensure the victories of Democratic candidates, may have given the NYC former mayor the encouragement he needed to take on US Rep. Malliotakis.

Gov. Hochul could sign into law the state Legislature’s redistricting maps, which passed in the state Assembly today, as early as Wednesday night.

The 11th district, which, in the past has included Staten Island and part of southern Brooklyn, which are traditionally Republican, will soon likely include the heavily Democratic areas of Sunset Park, Gowanus, and Park Slope, where the former mayor lives.

In fact, shortly after his last day as mayor, de Blasio tweeted a video that was filmed on his street in Park Slope, in which he announced that while he would not run for governor, he would soon fill everyone in on his future plans.

In the video, de Blasio made sure to point out how much he and his wife Chirlaine McCray, “loved their neighbors:” neighbors whom the former mayor may be hoping will be his new constituents.

The former mayor’s move to run makes sense, as whenever he was asked, in the waning days of his eight-year term, what the future held for him, who has long worked in government, de Blasio always smiled and answered, “Only public service.”

Democratic legislators who redrew the 11th congressional district seat to try to force out Malliotakis, the New York Post reported, are not happy to see that de Blasio, who was unable to accrue much support when he wanted to run governor, might be pursuing power in the district.

While many insiders are not surprised by de Blasio's likely decision to run, Rose, appears to be stunned by the news, as he wrote his supporters Tuesday night in an e-mail blast.

“Former New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has never been my biggest fan, but now he might be my primary opponent,” Rose wrote. “I know, I laughed at first too, but the implications aren’t funny.”
