Speed Cameras Just Generate Revenue, Assemblyman Eichenstein Said

Police officers and speed bumps are best to stop speeders on the streets of New York City, Assemblyman Simcha Eichenstein said on the floor of the Assembly after voting “no” on additional 24/7 speed cameras, as the legislative session came to an end on Friday.

“Let the record reflect, [the speed cameras] started as a pilot program intended to keep children safe in front of the schools, during school hours,” said Assemblyman Eichenstein, who was allowed to explain his vote. “Ten years later, we have hundreds of cameras all over the city: nowhere near schools, by the way, and now we want to expand it to 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”

Addressing the Assembly Speaker, Assemblyman Eichenstein said, “Mr. Speaker, as far as I’m concerned, this is all about revenue.”

Assemblyman Eichenstein then wondered why the city of New York takes three years to install speed bumps, but cameras that generate fines and violations “are up and running in 48 hours?”

“[The speed cameras] are all about fines and generating revenue, Mr. Speaker, I vote in the negative.”
