Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to Retire
Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is retiring and will step down early this summer presenting President Biden with his first opportunity to fill a vacancy on the high court.
Breyer, who is 83, was appointed by former President Bill Clinton and is known as a moderate liberal. Biden will now have the chance to make his mark by nominating the first African-American female justice as he promised during his campaign for the white house, reinforcing the court’s liberal minority. Breyer's replacement will need to be confirmed by the Senate, which is currently split 50-50 between Democrats and Republicans, with Democrats technically holding the majority because Vice President Harris can break ties.
"The Left bullied Justice Breyer into retirement and now it will demand a justice who rubber stamps its liberal political agenda," Judicial Crisis Network President Carrie Severino tweeted.
Republican activists already appear to be gearing up to oppose Biden’s eventual pick.
