Weekend Weather: Oppressive Heat Through Tisha b’Av, Interrupted by Rain Friday Night

By: Yaker Biegeleisen

We have been suffering with heat indexes surpassing 100 degrees, and if there is any good news on the horizon, it is that we will ‘only’ be in the 90’s—which is still extremely hot, especially for the fast of Tisha b’Av.

The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for Friday through 8:00 in the evening.

We expect some rain late Friday night, into early Shabbos morning, but the heat will remain with us. There is also a chance of some showers throughout Shabbos day—but it’ll be hot and sunny for the most part.

It is crucial that we load up on fluids during any heat wave, but certainly since we will be fasting on Sunday. A bit of lime is said to increase the effectiveness of the water we take in. Since this Tish b’Av is a nidche, those who find themselves in special categories (nursing, unwell, expecting, or elderly) should consult a rov whether they should fast.

CATSKILLS: The rain will arrive in the mountains a bit earlier on Friday afternoon, into the evening, and it could be heavy at times. There will also likely be showers on Shabbos day.
