What’s Going On With the Verrazzano Bridge?

Drivers crossing the Verrazzano Bridge may have noticed something unusual: its towers now appear patchy and uneven in color. This is part of a major $128.5 million project that involves completely repainting the bridge.

The work includes removing all the old paint, treating the steel underneath, and applying three fresh coats. The final layer will match the original color of the bridge and is designed to last up to 30 years. Temporary platforms have been built to protect vehicles during the process, which is expected to finish by summer 2026.

Along with the painting, crews are also repairing parts of the steel and upgrading the electrical and lighting systems.
