Yet Another Scammer Caught Red-Handed by Boro Park Shomrim After $60K Scheme
By Y.M. Lowy
A woman who was scammed out of over $60,000 helped bring the scammer to justice this week, thanks to a coordinated effort by Shomrim and the NYPD.
It began yesterday when the woman contacted Shomrim after realizing she had been scammed. The caller had posed as a Social Security official and used a phone number that appeared to come from the NYPD’s 62nd Precinct. He convinced her to hand over $30,000 in cash.
Shomrim’s IT team began reviewing surveillance footage, tracking the scammer’s every step through Boro Park, from one camera to the next, until he entered a vehicle and left the area.
Then today, after the scammer contacted the woman again, instructing her to withdraw another large sum of money and prepare to meet him once more, Shomrim and the NYPD were ready. Remaining in contact with the woman, they helped her go through the motions as if she were following the scammer’s demands. She withdrew the money and returned home as instructed, but law enforcement officers were already in position.
As soon as the woman handed over the cash, Shomrim and NYPD officers swooped in and arrested the suspect on the spot.
Unfortunately, these scams are becoming increasingly common. This case is a clear warning to the community. Never hand over cash or personal information based on a phone call, even if the caller sounds official or knows your personal details like your address or ID number. That’s exactly how they try to manipulate and scare you.
STAY ALERT - DON'T BE THE NEXT VICTIM!
