Green-Wood Cemetery to Receive $1.8 Million for Stormwater Project
By Y.M. Lowy
Governor Kathy Hochul today announced over $20 million in awards for two key programs that support clean water initiatives across the state. The programs are the Green Innovation Grant Program and Wastewater Infrastructure Engineering Planning Grants.
This funding helps modernize water infrastructure to protect public health and prepare for extreme weather. The awards were announced during National Water Quality Month, which takes place every August.
“Every New Yorker deserves access to clean, safe water, and we’re making that happen by investing in smart, affordable infrastructure upgrades,” Governor Hochul said.
The Environmental Facilities Corporation is awarding 17 million dollars through the Green Innovation Grant Program to support 12 stormwater infrastructure and water efficiency projects. The program supports solutions that help reduce flooding.
One project is based in Boro Park at Green-Wood Cemetery and will receive $1.8 million to improve stormwater management in the area. This is the second phase of a broader effort to reduce stormwater and sewage overflows into nearby waterways like the Gowanus Canal and Upper New York Bay. By managing stormwater more efficiently, the project will help reduce flooding in the area.
