Your Checks Missing? U.S. Postal Employees Indicted for Stealing Checks from Mail
Two U.S. Postal Service employees assigned to the East New York Post Office in Brooklyn have been indicted on charges of stealing checks from mail they were supposed to deliver, taking nearly $15,000 intended for residents.
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez announced the charges alongside officials from the U.S. Postal Service Office of the Inspector General and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service.
The defendants were identified as Nicole Bernard, 41, of East Flatbush, and Kenisha Hazzard, 30, of Brownsville. Both were employed as mail carriers at the East New York Station on Atlantic Avenue.
Bernard stole four checks between March 2023 and January 2024, depositing some into bank accounts connected to her. The checks totaled $12,465.80.
Hazzard stole seven checks between October 6 and October 31, 2023, and deposited them into her personal bank account. Those checks totaled $2,487.75.
The alleged thefts affected 10 victims, with total losses of $14,953.55.
“The defendants in this case were entrusted to deliver mail, including checks, safely to residents of East New York,” District Attorney Gonzalez said, adding that they allegedly took advantage of that responsibility to enrich themselves.
