ALERT: New Social Media Prank Trend Targets Heimishe Pedestrians - Stay Away!
By Y.M. Lowy
A troubling social media trend is prompting a warning to residents: Beware of strangers approaching you on the street with strange, provocative, or inappropriate questions, as they may be secretly recording your reaction to post online for views and attention.
In these situations, a person may approach someone on the street and start asking uncomfortable questions, hoping to get a reaction. What may seem like a random conversation could actually be an attempt to record the exchange and post it online for views and attention.
Many people are not familiar with this tactic and may not realize what is happening. They may answer a stranger normally, not knowing that the person is trying to get them to say something embarrassing or react in a way that will make the video more entertaining to viewers.
The recording is not always obvious. Some people use their phones or small cameras, while others may use smart glasses, including Meta glasses, that look like regular eyeglasses and can record video.
Once a video is posted, it can quickly spread across social media and be seen by thousands of people. Clips can also be shared without the full context of what happened, leaving the person in the video embarrassed over an interaction they never intended to make public.
For heimish locals who may not be familiar with these types of social media stunts, it is important to recognize that not every stranger who starts an unusual conversation is necessarily looking for a genuine answer.
If someone approaches you with strange, provocative or inappropriate questions, you do not have to answer. There is no reason to get drawn into an argument or feel that you need to explain yourself.
Do not give the person the reaction they are looking for, simply walk away.
Residents are encouraged to speak with family members, friends, and neighbors about this trend, especially those who do not follow social media or online news. Making them aware of these tactics beforehand can help prevent an innocent person from unknowingly becoming the subject of an embarrassing viral video.
Not every unusual conversation is a setup, but being aware that some people are deliberately trying to record reactions for social media can help prevent an unsuspecting person from becoming the next victim.
