We are saddened to inform you of the passing of Reb Lazer Freund, a Holocaust survivor from a legendary family in prewar Hungary. He was 93 years of age.
Reb Lazer hailed from the town of Satmar, where his grandfather, Reb Chaim was the Rosh Hakohol of the town. While Reb Chaim was able to go to Eretz Yisroel before the war, many of his children perished in the Holocaust. Among the surviving descendants was his grandson, Lazer, as well as his son Yosef and his daughter Chana—who spent the months of 1944-45 in Auschwitz.
What better shidduch for the orphaned young man than his first cousin, whom he married in Eretz Yisroel, in the presence of his grandfather, Reb Chaim, who was a confidante of the Brisker Rov.
The couple came to America soon thereafter and settled in Crown Heights, and later in Boro Park, where R’ Lazer was in the textile industry. He davened in Strizov and in Spinka, and is remembered fondly by his many descendants and all those who knew him.
The levaya took place at the Spinka Beis Medrash this afternoon.
