Below-Zero Temperatures Expected Tonight: What to Know to Stay Safe
By Y.M. Lowy
New York City is facing a stretch of dangerously cold and windy weather, with conditions expected to worsen tonight and into early Wednesday morning.
Today will be cold across the city. West winds of 10 to 15 miles per hour will strengthen through the afternoon, with gusts reaching 25 to 30 miles per hour. A few light snow flurries are possible, though no accumulation is expected. While daytime conditions will be freezing, the most serious concerns begin later tonight.
Another surge of Arctic air will move in this evening, sending temperatures and wind chills sharply downward. After midnight, wind chills are expected to drop below zero, reaching approximately 5 to 9 degrees below zero by early Wednesday morning. These are life-threatening conditions for anyone exposed for more than a brief period of time.
Being outdoors will become painful, and exposed skin can freeze within minutes. Waiting for transit, walking long distances, or working outside will be dangerous without full winter protection. Homes will also lose heat more quickly, particularly apartments with poor insulation or heating issues, increasing the risk of frozen pipes. Vehicles may struggle to start in the cold, and some roadways could become icy overnight, especially bridges and overpasses.
This stretch of extreme cold is expected to continue through the week, with additional dangerous wind chills possible on Thursday and Friday. BoroPark24 will continue to monitor the situation and keep you updated.
Anyone experiencing heating issues should contact 311 immediately. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors should be checked, and outdoor heating pipes must be kept clear to prevent dangerous carbon monoxide buildup. Car tailpipes should also be cleared of snow, and carbon monoxide detectors should be used in all homes.
For those planning to drive beyond local streets, winter preparedness is essential. Vehicles should be winterized, and drivers are encouraged to carry an emergency kit that includes blankets, food, water, a shovel, jumper cables, a flashlight, reflectors, and a first aid kit.
The extreme cold is expected to continue over the next several days, so staying prepared can help things run more smoothly during the stretch.
