Boro Park has recorded the highest flu infection rate of any neighborhood in New York City, as flu cases continue to rise across the city with the arrival of the yearly flu season.
According to the latest city health data, Boro Park recorded 59.13 flu cases per 100,000 residents during the week ending October 24, more than double the citywide average of 29.30 cases per 100,000 residents.
The figures place Boro Park ahead of every other neighborhood in the five boroughs, including Gramercy Park/Murray Hill and the Upper East Side in Manhattan, which each recorded 50.47 cases per 100,000 residents.
The increase comes as flu activity continues to grow across New York City, with reported cases rising sharply since September.
Citywide, cases of influenza A H1 increased from a weekly average of 57 in September to 498 during the week ending October 24. Other types of influenza also showed significant increases, including untyped influenza A cases, which rose from a weekly average of 395 to 1,583.
Several other Brooklyn neighborhoods are also experiencing elevated flu rates, including Greenpoint, Sunset Park, East Flatbush, and Coney Island. However, none have reached the levels reported in Boro Park.
With flu season now underway, health officials are encouraging residents to get their annual flu shots and take precautions to reduce the spread of the virus, including washing hands frequently, covering coughs and sneezes, avoiding close contact with sick individuals, and staying home when experiencing flu symptoms to prevent it from spreading to others.
