Burn Ban Issued as Dry Weather Raises Fire Risk

By Y.M. Lowy

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a temporary statewide burn ban as dry weather and gusty winds increase the risk of wildfires across New York.

The ban, which lasts till October 15, prohibits most outdoor fires, including brush burning, campfires, and open cooking fires. Small, contained backyard fire pits and cooking fires are still allowed, but burning garbage or leaves remains banned year-round.

Officials say several parts of the state are facing high fire danger, with little rain expected in the coming days. The state is still recovering from last year’s severe fire season, when hundreds of brush fires broke out during dry conditions.

Since August, forest rangers have already responded to more than 60 wildfires, many of which could have been prevented. Hochul urged New Yorkers to follow the rules and use caution until conditions improve.
