Between March and November of 2022, 2,308 people were forcibly removed from homeless encampments in the city. However, according to a report issued by NYC Comptroller Brad Lander, only three of them found permanent housing, and the number of homeless has gone up by 18% in 2023.
This despite $171 million new funding for outreach.
However, the city defended these statistics. Social Services Commissioner Molly Wasow Park, who oversees the Department of Homeless Services, said in a statement that, “Over this past year, our agency has responded to a massive humanitarian crisis while ensuring that we are effectively delivering on our mission to address homelessness in New York City.”
