Judge Orders de Blasio to Pay $475K for Misusing Public Funds

By Y.M. Lowy

Former NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio has been ordered to pay $475,000 after a judge ruled he misused public money during his 2019 run for president.

The city’s ethics board previously determined de Blasio violated rules by taking his NYPD security detail on 31 out-of-state trips, racking up $320,000 in travel expenses and incurring $155,000 in fines.

De Blasio’s argument of unclear guidance and First Amendment violations was dismissed by Judge Shahabuddeen Ally, who stated the former mayor disregarded explicit warnings.

Neither de Blasio nor his attorney commented on the ruling.
