Local Politicians React To Israel and Hamas Ceasefire Deal

By Idy Perl

There are mixed emotions and reactions following the news of a hostage deal being reached between Israel and Hamas.

The ceasefire deal will have several phases, the first of which will go into effect on Sunday and will release 33 hostages in exchange for hundreds of Palestinian terrorists. Phase two will include an exchange of the remaining hostages in exchange for more Palestinian terrorists, and the withdrawal of all Israeli forces from Gaza. There are reports that some of the hostages may no longer be alive, and there is no way to know just how many living hostages will be coming home.

Trump, of course, will get his photo op and bragging rights of having pressured Hamas into a deal, but at what cost? We can only hope that further details of the deal will show that the last 15 months of pain, war and loss weren’t all for nothing.

Mayor Adams took to X with the following statement:

"After 15 months of drowning in unfathomable pain, today we come up for just a little air with news that Israel and Hamas have agreed to a ceasefire deal and 33 hostages will finally come home. I continue to stand in solidarity with every mother, father, and child who has suffered as a result of this conflict. Every step forward in peace, every hostage released, and every life spared is a victory in this long road to justice and security. Let us also take a moment to remember the innocent civilian lives lost in Gaza and the hostages who will never make it home. May their memory be a blessing, and may we continue to turn our pain into purpose, securing a future of peace and prosperity for both the Israeli and Palestinian people."

Attorney General Letitia James released a disappointing statement as well, saying:

"Millions of New Yorkers have strong ties to the ongoing conflict in Gaza, with many having family and loved ones who are directly impacted by the hostage crisis and resulting war. We have all watched in horror as, for more than a year, the conflict has raged, hostages have been kept from their families, thousands of lives have been lost, and communities have been torn apart. It is my deepest hope that this ceasefire deal will not only end this current conflict, but also help bring about a lasting, fair peace in the region."

It’s quite telling that in her entire statement, AG James managed to not mention the word Israel even once. New York leadership, huh.

Our thoughts and tefillos are with the hostages and IDF soldiers, and we daven that they all come back home.
