Lane Closures on Highways Suspended for July 4 Weekend to Ease Traffic

To make traveling easier for drivers hitting the highways this July 4 weekend, all temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction projects on New York state highways will be suspended from July 1 at 6am to July 5 at 6am.
While New York aims to prioritize drivers by minimizing traffic and travel delays by suspending temporary lane closures, some work may continue behind permanent concrete barriers or for emergency repairs.
The number of people on the roads this holiday weekend likely will top 43.2 million, which is an increase of 2.4% over 2022 and 4% higher than 2019, the American Automobile Association (AAA) predicted.
To prevent accidents, New York’s Move-Over Law requires drivers not only to slow down, but to ensure they move over safely for law enforcement vehicles, fire trucks, ambulances, tow trucks, and construction or maintenance vehicles that are stopped along roads across the state.
Drivers are also reminded that texting while driving is especially dangerous: as it requires motorists to take their eyes off the road, hands off the wheel, and minds off driving. Instead of picking up phones and driving while distracted, drivers are encouraged to make “text stops,” at park-and-ride facilities, rest stops, service areas, and parking areas along state highways.
"The Fourth of July holiday weekend is expected to be another busy travel period, and we want to ensure people get to their destinations with minimal delays," said Gov. Kathy Hochul. "I encourage everyone traveling this holiday weekend to plan ahead, drive responsibly, and have a safe and happy Independence Day."
