Lithium-Ion Battery Fires Rise in New York City in 2026
By Y.M. Lowy
Lithium-ion battery fires continue to pose a serious safety concern across New York City, with fire-related injuries and deaths reported at higher levels than in 2025 despite attempts to educate residents about the dangers.
So far in 2026, there have been 401 fires caused by lithium-ion batteries, resulting in 74 injuries and six deaths, according to the latest figures released by the FDNY. The numbers are already up compared with last year.
The FDNY is urging New Yorkers to follow battery safety guidelines, particularly when using and charging e-bikes, e-scooters and other micromobility devices.
Residents are advised to use only approved batteries and chargers, avoid charging devices near exits or while sleeping, and never leave batteries charging unattended. Damaged or overheating batteries can pose a serious fire risk.
