Mayor Adams Requests Earlier Trial Date For Federal Charges

Mayor Adams Requests Earlier Trial Date For Federal Charges

By Idy Perl

Mayor Adams is apparently not letting the federal charges hanging over his head hold him back from running for reelection.

Adams was indicted in September on charges that he accepted various bribes and travel perks from the Turkish government in exchange for political favors, as reported by BoroPark24.

This morning, Adams' lawyer reportedly asked a federal judge if his corruption trial can start a few weeks earlier that scheduled in order to give him time to focus on his reelection campaign in the spring. Currently his trial is set to begin on April 21st, and his lawyers are asking for it to be moved up to April 1st.

“An earlier trial date will ensure that Mayor Adams’s speedy trial rights are upheld, that the Mayor will be able to fully participate in his reelection campaign, and that this City’s voters can be rid of the distraction of this misguided indictment as they hear from and evaluate the Democratic candidates for Mayor on their merits,” his attorney wrote in a letter to the judge.

The judge has yet to respond, but we admire (?) the mayor's perseverence not to let pesky little federal charges put a damper on his reelection dreams.
