Mayor Bill de Blasio Increases NYPD Funding by $105 million, After Shockingly Large Crime Surge

After insisting on the solutions of Precision Policing, social workers replacing police officers in many situations, and improving relations between the community and police, tonight Mayor Bill de Blasio finally agreed to increase NYPD funding by $105 million, Politico reported.

After the gun violence in New York City more than doubled last week, on Shabbos, three people, including a 4-year-old girl were shot and injured in Times Square. This morning, however, at his press conference, Mayor Bill de Blasio incredibly claimed that tourists will not be deterred by the city's shocking levels of crime.

Although the mayor acknowledged that the shooting was “a horrible incident,” “unacceptable,” and that “We're putting additional NYPD resources in the Time Square area to add an extra measure of protection,” he insisted, “in the end, people want to come to this city.

“It is an overwhelmingly safe city.”

But despite the dire statistics, the mayor continues to put optimistic faith in approaches to policing that have just not worked very well. In addition, the mayor has continued to view the end of the pandemic as a magic balm for reducing crime.

“We saw how well we did for years and year, getting violence down, working with communities," the mayor said. “A lot of that got disrupted by global pandemic.

"The answer is: bring back jobs, bring back activities, and keep refining our policing strategies. There’s no question in my mind, as the city comes back, that's going to help us to reduce crime and violence.”

But the reality is that more than 7 million New Yorkers have been vaccinated, and the COVID positivity rate is diminishing every day, however, in the seven-day period that ended on Shabbos, the NYPD recorded 36 shooting incidents with 43 victims, which is a shocking increase compared to the 15 incidents and 16 victims throughout the same dates last year, according to police statistics that no travel brochure would highlight.

Last week’s tally of gun violence, was, unfortunately, not an outlier in a year in which gun violence has continued to surge, since the COVID-19 pandemic started in March 2020.
