Nine Months After 3 Revel Crashes, NYC Has Not Yet Created Regulations for Scooters

New York City has still not progressed in its efforts to regulate moped-share services nine months after the city allowed Revel to the streets after the company reassessed its safety measures after three of its riders passed away in fatal crashes last August.

During its one-month temporary suspension, Revel create new safety protocols, such as mandatory “helmet selfies” users must snap and send before each ride, a required safety test, and the exclusion in the company’s hours of operation of midnight to 5am when data showed more crashes.

The city’s Department of Transportation (DOT) admitted that it has not made much progress in its efforts to make moped-sharing services safer for New Yorkers.

“It’s delayed,” DOT Commissioner for Education and Outreach Kim Wiley-Schwartz said yesterday, when she was asked about the status of the regulations.

“We’re working on it, is the answer,” DOT Commissioner Hank Gutman chimed in.
