New Subway Platform Safety Measures Being Tested by MTA
by Mindy Cohn
The MTA is testing a variety of safety methods in an effort to prevent riders from falling or being pushed onto the tracks, although finding something that works for NYC's 472 stations is a daunting task.
The safety measures are a response to the twenty-two riders pushed onto the tracks last year and the fifteen victims so far in 2023.
One example of a new safety device is the yellow safety barriers installed at the L at Bedford Avenue, 57th Street on the F in Manhattan, and Crescent Street along the J.
A pilot program for platform doors is still in the procurement stage and will be tested at the 7 train at Times Square, the E line at Sutphin Boulevard, and Third Avenue on the L.
Cameras and detection devices have also been installed to monitor live footage and alert station crews at a few stations.
And while platform doors were feasible at 27% of stations, according to a study by the MTA, installing them would cost $7 billion to install, followed by the $100 million required for maintenance.
In addition to any safety measures, riders need to stay alert.
