NYC Department of Transportation Announces Upgraded Parking Meters

By BoroPark24 Staff

The New York City Department of Transportation (NYC DOT) unveiled upgraded, modern parking meters that will start getting rolled out across the city starting next month. The meter’s new Pay-by-Plate technology will allow drivers to input their license plate number instead of printing out a receipt to display on their window.

The city’s current parking meters print around 2,500 miles of receipts every year; enough to stretch between New York and Los Angeles. The Pay-by-Plate model will lessen the carbon footprint and contribute to cleaner streets with reduced litter. The upgrade will also eliminate the illegal practice of transferring parking times to a different zone or vehicle via paper receipt.

The new meters make payment easier than ever, with drivers being able to pay either on the meter or through the ParkNYC app. The new meters will include a large display screen for the payment and license plate information and will accept contactless card payments. As with the app, transactions from the meters are instantaneously synced with the NYPD parking enforcement systems so that traffic agents can easily identify which drivers have paid.

The rollout is set to start in Manhattan before continuing to the other five boroughs.
