New York City is continuing to experience dangerous heat conditions as temperatures surged into the upper 90s across parts of the city yesterday, with some neighborhoods nearing the 100-degree mark.

According to NYC Emergency Management, LaGuardia Airport reached 96 degrees, tying the daily temperature record first set in 2017. Long Island City in Queens recorded 98.4 degrees, while Fresh Kills in Staten Island reached 97.6 degrees. Astoria climbed to 96.7 degrees, and the Van Nest section of the Bronx recorded 96.6 degrees.

The National Weather Service Heat Advisory remains in effect, while New York City’s Heat Emergency Plan remains activated. Temperatures Wednesday are expected to remain in the low 90s, with heat index values approaching 95 degrees during the afternoon hours.

Officials are warning that the extreme heat can be especially dangerous for elderly residents, infants, people with health conditions, outdoor workers, and anyone without air conditioning. Residents are encouraged to stay hydrated, spend time in air-conditioned areas when possible, and check in on neighbors, elderly relatives, and elderly acquaintances during the heat conditions.

Officials also reminded residents never to leave children inside vehicles, as temperatures inside cars can rise dangerously fast within minutes.

As of today, thunderstorms are expected to move across New York City from the late afternoon into the evening hours, with the strongest storms most likely between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m. Forecasters warn that all thunderstorms are potentially dangerous and could bring lightning, heavy rain, sudden changes in conditions, and damaging wind gusts of up to 55 mph locally.

Strong winds may blow around loose outdoor objects, bring down tree limbs, and impact power lines. Heavy rain may also develop quickly, with minor flooding possible in poor drainage areas, low-lying streets, and underpasses. Residents are advised to avoid walking or driving through flooded roadways and be prepared for possible emergency situations.

The storms may also impact travel across the region. Ground stops and delay programs are possible this afternoon and evening at LaGuardia, JFK, and Newark airports as storms move through the area. Travelers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport, whether departing or picking someone up.
