NYPD Modernizes Operations Across the City

The NYPD is introducing a set of updates focused on officer training and technology, part of a big plan to modernize how the department operates across the city.

Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch outlined the changes in her State of the NYPD address, saying the department is seeing lower gun violence and overall crime declines, and is now putting added focus on preparation for officers in the field.

One major change is training. Officers will now take part in a weeklong in-service program that covers field tactics, de-escalation, legal standards, and situational awareness. The department says this is the largest training refresh in decades and is meant to better match real street conditions.

Several everyday systems are also going digital. The 311 dispatch system will be upgraded so officers can more easily receive and close quality-of-life calls. Precinct logbooks, which have been handwritten since 1845, will finally go digital, giving supervisors a real-time look at operations.

The NYPD’s camera and sensor network is also being expanded. A new version of its Domain Awareness System will push live alerts to officers, including stolen vehicle hits and drone footage at active scenes, to help speed up response.

Finally, the Police Academy will be renamed in honor of Detective Steven D. McDonald, who was shot and paralyzed in 1986. McDonald became a symbol of courage and forgiveness, and the dedication ceremony is set for July 16, 2026, marking 42 years since he first entered the academy. 

The rollout will continue over the coming months as the department puts the new systems and training programs into place citywide.
