PSA: Proper Disposal Guidelines for Post-Sukkos Cleanup
By BoroPark24 Staff
As the Jewish community concludes Sukkos, many residents find themselves with materials like sukkah panels (metal, wood, etc.) and schach (wooden mats) that need to be discarded.
Since these materials aren’t typically thrown out during the year, there’s often confusion about the proper disposal methods. Following these guidelines ensures smooth waste collection for both residents and the Department of Sanitation, keeping neighborhoods clean and sidewalks clear.
Here’s a breakdown to help you dispose of these materials safely and legally:
Metal and Rigid Plastic Sukkah Panels: These items should be placed at the curb the night before your designated recycling day. DSNY trucks will collect these with other recyclables.
Wood and Other Non-Recyclable Panels and Schach: Place these items out the night before your trash-only day (not on recycling/compost day), as DSNY often uses dual-bin trucks for recycling and compost that may not have the capacity for bulk trash.
For more information on bulk item disposal, visit the NYC Department of Sanitation’s resource page here.
Proper disposal benefits everyone — the DSNY, residents, and the whole community!
