Time Magazine, which has been around for nearly 100 years, did not just name New York City’s interactive, online subway map as one of 2021’s best inventions, but the magazine put the digital map on its cover.

Last fall, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) rolled out its new, interactive subway map that updates the familiar, colorful, and striking map that Massimo Vignelli created in 1970.

To envision what routes would be best for passengers, who, instead of squinting their eyes at confusing paper subway maps, can now go the MTA’s website to enter locations and destinations before three choices appear: the fastest route, the one with the least amount of changes, and the route with the least amount of walking.

The accuracy and ease of use of the MTA’s new live, interactive map makes it "relief for straphangers," the Time report says about the digital subway map that shows moving trains above a geographically-correct street grid and automatic real-time updates.

"Created in partnership with digital agency Work & Co, the map is a design feat, retaining the iconic, four-decade-old look, while bringing it up-to-the-minute with live data," the magazine says.

In addition to the honor from Time Magazine, the web-based map also received a Gold Lion award during the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity and a "Webby," which is a Fast Company innovation prize.
