First-Time Use: Drones Issue Weather Warnings in NYC
By Idy Perl
If you hear a loudspeaker broadcasting warnings about storms and possible flooding later today but can’t spot the vehicle its coming from, don’t fear, you’re not just hearing things.
Mayor Adams announced that NYC employed drones equipped with loudspeakers during the upcoming storm to alert residents about flood warnings. The drones were sent to vulnerable neighborhoods that are near the beach or have residents in basements, which are at greater risk for flooding.
The drones have already been used in the past to monitor beaches for public safety, and this was the first time that such drones will be used for weather warnings.
