NYC to Quadruple Red-Light Cameras
By Idy Perl
Slow down at red lights because NYC just got the green light to add more ticketing cameras at intersections across the city.
Last week Governor Hochul signed a bill that allows the city to install ticketing cameras at an additional 600 intersections, quadrupling from the 150 intersections that currently have cameras. The program, which was set to expire December 1st, will now run through December 2027.
Hochul pointed to data that shows that since the red-light cameras were first installed around 30 years ago, violations at intersections with cameras fell 73%.
“I don’t know what more you need than that data point,” Hochul said. “When there’s a camera, drivers know about it. They’re less likely to drive through a red light, and that means they’re less likely to kill someone on the street.”
