MTA to Install New Traffic Cams in Bus Lanes
By Idy Perl
The MTA signed a contract to spend a ginormous chunk of tax dollars, $141 million to be exact, to install new traffic cams on buses to monitor vehicles blocking the bus lanes.
This deal is an extension of a program that was put in place in 2019 which introduced cameras to around 600 city buses. The cameras are able to automatically ticket vehicles parked in bus lanes. The new cameras will be installed on roughly 1,000 buses by the end of the year, and the updated technology will also ticket vehicles that are double parked along bus routes or are blocking bus lanes or bus stops.
Drivers will face a $50 fine for the first offenses caught by the cameras, and $250 if they’re caught five or more times in a 12-month period.
