NYPD Police Exit the Shrinking Force in Droves

New York police officers continue to leave the job at an accelerated rate, alarming many in the City, especially given that the mayor canceled the next five police academy classes, as reported by BoroPark24 here.

The decreasing number of officers has depleted the NYPD to the point that it is now the smallest it has been in decades despite crime continuing to spike throughout the City.

The alarming 104% increase in police departures since 2020, totaling 2,516 officers leaving this year, has forced remaining police officers to work "inhumane amounts of forced overtime," Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry told the New York Post.

The overload factor creates a vicious cycle, driving even more police officers from the job, including the twenty-one police officers who left the position on February 20 and 21 to join the MTA, a job that they felt has more meaning in a climate where a police officer has to be afraid to make arrests due to anti-cop sentiment. Even when they do make an arrest, New York's revolving door policy makes it all pointless, as the criminals are right back out on the street shortly after that.
