Governor Hochul Announces $234 Million in Additional Food Assistance for September

All NY households enrolled in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) will receive additional monthly payments of at least $95 from September to November, Gov. Hochul announced on Tuesday.

SNAP households in the five-county New York City region should see their benefits posted between Friday, September 16, and Thursday, September 29.

SNAP households in all counties outside of New York City should see their extra benefits posted between today and Monday, September 26.

"Too many hardworking New Yorkers continue to feel the effects of the pandemic-struggling to make ends meet and put food on the table," said Gov. Hochul, who added that all New Yorkers will receive the maximum allowable level of food benefits for September. "My administration will continue taking action to support our most vulnerable communities, and the $234 million in SNAP benefits announced today will provide the necessary funding to ensure hundreds of thousands of New York households avoid food insecurity."

By spending their supplemental allotments on much-needed groceries this month, SNAP participants help NY recover and thrive by infusing approximately $234 million of federal funding into the state’s economy.

“Every federal dollar invested by SNAP generates up to $1.54 in economic activity, according to a federal study that quantified SNAP’s impact on the U.S. economy,” Gov. Hochul said.

"No New Yorker should ever have to worry about where their next meal is coming from,” said NY Sen. Charles Schumer said. “That is why I fought for a historic increase to SNAP during the pandemic through the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021, and again in the American Rescue Plan.

“We doubled down to deliver this additional boost in federal funding to help struggling families keep food on the table. SNAP is a lifeline for so many New Yorkers and I will always fight to deliver the federal resources needed to ensure no New Yorker goes hungry or gets left behind."

The NY state Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA) oversees SNAP, and began to provide emergency supplemental benefits to households receiving less than the maximum monthly benefits in April 2020.

Although NY’s emergency declaration expired in June 2021, the OTDA successfully worked with the federal government to continue to provide the maximum allotments for all SNAP households until November.

In July, more than 1.6 million NY households, including more than 2.8 million New Yorkers, throughout the state enrolled in SNAP.
