Mayor Adams Vehemently Threatens Veto of NYPD Reform Bill

by Mindy Cohn

Mayor Eric Adams announced that he plans to veto the How Many Stops Act bill requiring police officers to report every low-level stop they make even when the individual is free to leave.

"There's no way I will sign this bill into law," Adams declared during an interview on Sunday with CBS News New York. "The more and more you have police officers handle paperwork, they're not going after perpetrators. That is not how you keep the city safe."

Adams states further that the bill's passage will endanger public safety.

The proposed bill has been paired with a second bill that will require police to record when someone refuses to allow the police to search them.

The How Many Stops Act is sponsored by 32 City Council members out of 51 members and has the support of New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams.

Advocates for the bill say the measure would increase policing transparency.
