The NYPD has started a new pilot program aimed at keeping New York City subway riders safer.
Introducing - Knightscope's K5, a robotic crime-fighting machine that has your back on the track for only nine dollars an hour.
The five 5 foot 2, 420-pound cone with wheels boasts four ultra-HD (4K) cameras, giving it complete 360-degree visibility, along with a thermal camera to detect heat differences, LED Lights, sixteen microphones, and a PA speaker and horn. It avoids obstacles and people when on the move and has a maximum speed of three miles per hour.
K5 covers its beat with an NYPD officer at its side.
The robot/officer team is meant to act as a physical deterrent to crime while recording those who commit crimes for future prosecution while saving the NYPD money and resources at a time when budgets are being cut, and NYPD officers are retiring and leaving the force in record numbers as reported by BoroPark24 here.
