New Poll: Yang Maintains Front Runner Status With A 6 Point Lead Over Stringer, McGuire Essentially Tied With Adams
A new poll, conducted by Slingshot Strategies between April 20th to May 6th, 2021 among likely NYC Democratic primary voters, found that 21% respondents selected Andrew Yang as their first choice for mayor of New York City. Scott Stringer remains only mildly impacted by his allegations, receiving 15% of first-choice votes, followed by Adams at 11% and Ray McGuire and 10%. It's the first time that the former banker has broken double-digits, passing Maya Wiley to move into fourth place with 10% of first-choice votes, and is essentially running even with Eric Adams. All other candidates remain in single-digit support.
Yang remains the only candidate with a multiracial, multi-borough, and multigenerational coalition of support. He remains the clear frontrunner
mong both Asian (45%) and Hispanic (26%) voters with double-digit leads over his rivals. Yang splits white voters with Stringer 17% to 23%, while
Black voters are split three ways between Adams (22%), Yang (20%), and McGuire (17%). Yang is the only candidate with double-digit support in every age group and every borough. The poll - half of which was conducted a week after the Stringer scandal broke, found that Stringer was hardly sketched by the scandal and is still in a comfortable number two position. The poll also tested a mayoral horserace without Stringer's name listed, in order to project voter behavior in the event that Stringer drops out of the race, or diminishes further due the scandal. 275 respondents were asked about this horserace. The chief beneficiaries in the absence of Stringer are Yang (+6) and Donovan (+4), with other candidates relatively unchanged in their vote share.
Slingshot Strategies conducted a multimodal poll with a random representative sample of 1668 registered, likely Democratic primary voters from April 20-27 and May 3-6, 2021. Sample breakdown by borough was 31% Brooklyn, 29% Manhattan, 22% Queens, 13% Bronx, 5% Staten Island.
